Anatomy of a Hurricane

Hurricanes are one of the most calamitous acts of nature, also known as cyclones or typhoons, it is more of a regional nomenclature than a scientific one, the exact scientific name is Tropical Cyclones.

Scientifically, tropical cyclones are swirling storms with a low pressure center, and in extreme cases wind speeds can reach to values more than 250 km/h. It has been proved that three essential ingredients are required for their formation, in brief they are, tropical ocean waters with surface temperature 26.5 ºC or higher coupled with high humid conditions, light upper level winds and most importantly an already existing thunderstorm disturbance.

Everyone knows about World War I and II, Cold War, the modern cyber warfare and many other historical wars. This is one war you have never heard of, the War of Currents. Thomas Alva Edison's and Nikola Tesla's fight over which form of electricity (DC or AC) to power the world.

It all began in 1884 when Tesla a Serb by birth immigrated to US with his childhood dream to harness the power of Niagra falls. On his arrival at New York, USA all that he had were four cents, some of his poems, designs for his flying machine and an introduction letter for Thomas Alva Edison from his previous employer Charles Batcehlor, one of the shortest and best introduction letters that I can think of

Google is one of the most powerful search engines that you can find on the World Wide Web. Undoubtedly Google is the homepage of most Internet users, including me and it didn't take much time for Google to be a household name.

What Google search engine does is clear enough, it gives you results for your search query and please bear in mind that the Google search engine is also an ardent follower of the famous phrase, Garbage In Garbage Out (GIGO). Well, I’m not saying that your search input or/and the results that Google give you are rubbish, what I’m really trying to prove is that the output heavily depends on the input. The right search query is very important, there is nothing Google can’t dig out for you if you know how to effectively use it.

The Science of Traffic Jams

Traffic jams are really frustrating, even if you are not in a hurry. The stand still traffic or the vehicle movement at a snail's pace can really get on your nerves and if you are in a hurry, do I have to say more? A vast amount of time is lost in these traffic jams. With the ever increasing volume of vehicles on road, the frequencies of traffic jams have gone up. Some of them have studied these traffic jams extensively and have a dedicated group like the Traffic Modelling group of MIT to study how and why do they occur, in an effort to find out the best possible ways to avoid jamitons (MIT jargon meaning travelling traffic waves).

The Supercar Rivalry

Rivalries exist everywhere, be it industry, sports, media, music, politics some of them are healthy but some of them are really fierce. Notable rivalries worth a mention are Microsoft vs. Apple, Pepsi vs. Coca Cola, Adidas vs. Puma, Boeing vs. Airbus, etc. Now, if I get into politics that would be too controversial, and probably I will have to bring the whole blog down, so let’s cut the politics and shift our focus to the automobile industry which too is not free from the grips of rivalry.

The automobile industry is one of the most competitive areas in the world today. Achieving a dominant market share is any auto manufacturing company’s goal and for this they would go to any lengths. Top rivalries in the auto world include Ferrari vs. Lamborghini, Ford vs. General Motors, Mercedes-Benz vs. BMW and many more with supercar manufacturers Ferrari and Lamborghini’s raging rivalry most discussed about.

What is a Higgs Boson?

Not a day goes by when I don’t see an article on Higgs boson. The entire science world is buzzing with this one particular fundamental particle. So what makes this mysterious particle so distinguished from others is that the particle’s existence was predicted in 1964, but not yet experimentally confirmed. Scientists at CERN are in pursuit of this particle as hints to their existence were observed in the year 2011.
